Chief Wilson of the Bidwell Police Department had called a mandatory briefing. All members of the department were required to be there. Pat and Magnell squirmed in their seats. They weren’t on the case of the missing boy, but the chief required everyone’s attendance. When the whole department was present, he began.
“All right, all right, quiet down. We’re here to talk about the kid that was kidnapped from Medford. Now I know most of you are working other cases, but I want everyone aware of where we are with this and what you can do to help catch the scumbag who took this child. As most of you know from the BOLO, the boy’s name is Joey Andrews. He’s six years old with straight dark hair and brown eyes. We’re passing around this year’s school picture. I can guarantee he isn’t the laughing smiling little boy in the picture. He’s gotta be terrified.”
He paused. “Assuming he’s even alive after almost three weeks. Now, there’s a vehicle people reported seeing around Joey’s school for a couple of weeks before he was grabbed. No one has a great description of it, but it’s most likely a dark-colored nineteen-ninety-six Chevy Monte Carlo.”
He showed a picture of the make and model.
“Okay, now Smythe and Carter are going to take over.”
The detectives stood up. One of them spoke. “As you can imagine, there are various agencies involved in trying to find the person who took Joey. Unfortunately, there are no persons of interest and no descriptions. The profiler has indicated we’re seeking a male, late thirties to early forties. The older the suspect is, the less likely that the child is still alive. They believe that younger molesters will keep the children around longer to play with, if you will.”
“Those guys don’t expect to get caught,” Magnell murmured to Pat. “A narcissistic psychology is what we’re talking about.”
Pat accepted this nugget of wisdom with a polite nod. Magnell liked to consider himself a font of wisdom on the mindsets of criminals. She cast a second glance at him, picking up on a seething anger just below the surface. Every now and then, she detected something unspoken and could almost feel the weight of the words. She had no idea what Magnell kept to himself, and she didn’t ask. In their line of work, everyone had experienced something too unbearable to discuss.
“Now, while you all haven’t been assigned to this case,” the officer continued, “we’re asking for your help. Please keep your eyes open for Joey. If you make a traffic stop, check the backseat for him. As you patrol, please be on the lookout for anyone acting suspiciously and pay attention to the behavior of any child who fits Joey’s description. I’m sorry we can’t give you more on the car. Just remember this shape.” He pointed to the picture again. “And that it’s a dark color. Remember, we’re all on the same team, so thank you for your time and your help. Let’s get this guy.
